BIKESA and BIKESANANTONIO Project Description Fall 1993

Intramodel Surface Transportation Enhancement Act (ISTEA) Grant Project Description

Fall 1993

BIKESA and BIKESANANTONIO is a novel plan for a comprehensive alternative transportation system for San Antonio. This safe, user friendly system concept involves dedicated bikeways minimizing bicycle/automobile interfacing.

BIKESA is designed to move people cost effectively and contribute to quality of life through a safe and environmentally aware system.

Initial discussions with San Antonio Parks and Recreation have indicated possible use of the  historic Alligator Gardens property for BIKESA headquarters.

BIKESA will interconnect San Antonio’s system of parks, museums, schools, and cultural tourist attractions while also providing a daily commuter route from suburbs to the downtown business district.

BIKESA and BIKESANANTONIO system will be composed of:

1. A Downtown Central Hub (partially elevated)

a) Hemisfair Plaza

b) Alamodome

c) Institute of Texan Cultures

d) The Alamo

e) Downtown hotels

f) Hospitals

g) Market Square

h) Municipal Auditorium

i) Y.M.C.A.

2. A North Spoke

a) Travis Park to Airport (Ave. B, Divine Bikeway)

b) San Antonio Museum of Art

c) VFW

d) Brackenridge Park

e) Lions Field

f) San Antonio Zoo

g) Witte Museum

h) Incarnate Word College

i) McNay Musuem

j) San Antonio Botanical Gardens

3. South spoke will utilize the Mission Trail corridor from the Central Hub to the Outer Wheel.

4. East Spoke will utilize the proposed Montana- Houston Street corridor linked to St. Phillips College to Salado Creek Outer Wheel.

5. West Spoke will link parks, Woodlawn Lake, St. Marys and Our Lady of the Lady University to the Outer Wheel.

Right of ways and easements through parkways are currently being negotiated with Parks and Recreation and San Antonio River Authority for a minimal lease hold fee. Work to be performed includes renovation of Alligator Gardens, construct bikeways, curb cuts, planting trees, bridges, elevated bikeways. Security will include fencing, lighting, telephones, cameras, and BIKESA staff maintenance.

6. The BIKESA Outer Wheel will encircle San Antonio and link together parks, Salado Creek, and green belts to form a continuous off-road bikeway system. Minimal interfacing of automobile and alternative transportation is designed into this vision.
